Barbara Benjamin (Bijou) has injured her back. She has an appointment with an orthopedist on the 17th (he's on vacation but has come highly recommended so she wants to wait for him) but in the meantime, she has to cope with a lot of pain - even with her meds. She doesn't think it's a disk this time so she's hoping that she won't need more surgery.

Bijou doesn't have a computer or an answering machine and she has to get out of bed to answer the phone so an encouraging card would be better than a call but if you'd rather call just give her plenty of time to get there. Her number is 631-363-8926. Her snail mail address is:
Barbara Benjamin
155 Terrace Rd.
Bayport, NY 11705

Barbara (Speedy) Gatti says you could send cards for Bijou to her either at her home address:
122 Barrett Ave.
Bayport, NY 11705
or email your message to Speedy at speedyrcmh@yahoo.com and she'll bring them over and then Bijou doesn't even have to think about bending over to pick them up.

Bernice Hess Klebaur has not been able to head for her winter home in Florida this season. Instead she's been undergoing treatment for an injured back and is now facing multiple eye surgeries to correct glaucoma and cataracts. Cards and wishes can be sent to Ber at:
24 Rock Lane
Guilford, CT 06437
or by email at gklebaur@aol.com

Grace Faherty Roeder's family is doing its part to keep this country safe. She has a daughter, Theresa returning to Iraq next week. Theresa is a Lieutenant connected with convoys. She also has a son, Andrew who is presently in Afghanistan, and another child leaving for Iraq in January. Grace says Christmas cards would be welcomed by those who are presently overseas. If you'd like to send gift packages, know that everyone shares when they receive goodies. Suggestions for contents are: chips (in sturdy cardboard containers so they don't crush), pretzels, popcorn (unpopped), cookies, cheese crackers, paperback books, etc. Of course no chocolates due to the heat but hard candy is good. Cards and/or packages can be sent to:

1st Lt. Roeder, Theresa
BFSC, 15FSB, 2BCT, 1CD
APO AE 09379

and

Roeder, Andrew
BCO 3-116TH INF
APO AE 09354-9998

Susan Wershing, publisher of Dance Teacher Now magazine, passed away on Nov. 23, 2003 at 64 yrs. old. Click to view pictures and article

Sue Kays(RCMH'42-45) has passed away. Dodo Parmenter provided the following article from an Atlanta newspaper (date unknown):

Long hours of rehearsals and auditions paid off for Sue Kays. She overcame childhood polio to become one of the world famous Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

When she was just 7 years old, her parents enrolled her in dance classes to help strech her muscles. By age 14, she was proficient in tap, jazz and ballet dancing, according to her daughter Betty Jane Netherton of Dunwoody.

In 1938, with just $200 in her pocket, Mrs Kays traveled from her home in West Palm Beach, FL to New York city to chase her dream of becoming a professional dancer.

"When she was with the New York City Ballet, her toes would bleed from practicing for so many long hours," said Mrs. Netherton.

After dancing with the New York City Ballet for a short time and traveling throughout the country with another dance troupe, Mrs. Kays' big break finally came in 1942 when she was selected as a Rockette.

"You had to be a great dancer in order to be picked as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall." said her friend and former Rockette Viola Varble of St. Louis.

Sue Kays danced with the Rockettes for 3 1/2 years. In 1951 she moved with her husband, Marion, to Atlanta. She continued to be a member of the Rockette Alumnae.

Sue Kays died at 83 years old of complications from heart failure. She is survived by three sons, Marion Reed Kays III of Atlanta, Dale Blandford Kays of Marietta and Wiliam Earnest Kays of Lawrenceville, two daughters, Lucy Jordan of Doraville and Betty Jane Netherton, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
